Most of us have spent most of our time this year at home due to Covid-19. With Covid-19 vaccines still months away for the wider population, it could well be that the study or work-from-home arrangement is here to stay in the near future. By this time, the excitement and novelty of staying home has probably worn out and it is only human to struggle with productivity.

To help you get out of this rut, we’ve prepared some tips for you to regain your productivity at home!

  1. Create a structure for your daily routine

    Now that you’re at home and the commute to the office or classroom is merely 10 steps away, and the most heroic thing to do during this worldwide pandemic is doing nothing, it is easy to lose your sense of time and urgency in managing your daily routine. Public holidays, weekends and weekdays are now just a series of day and night. Creating a structure for your daily routine helps to create a semblance of normalcy in an abnormal reality.

    For those who struggle to abide by your own schedule, you can start by jotting down three tasks you want to achieve before you start your day (think of it as a mini productivity journal). This could be as simple as to read 10 pages of a book or to complete an assignment.

  2. Dedicated work space

    The first thing that disappears when you are studying or working from home is the physical distinction between your work space and your personal space. It may seem insignificant but a dedicated work space can do wonders to help boost productivity while staying at home.   3. You are what you eat

    As tempting as it may be to order-in McDonald’s every day, what we eat have massive impact on the structure and health of our brains. Plus, it is now more important than ever to stay healthy. A healthy diet leads to a stronger immune system, thus giving us the best chance to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s easier than you think! To get you started on this, here are some useful tips:

    • Avoid sugar – Too much of a good thing is always a bad thing. Easiest thing to do is avoid sugary drinks and drink more water instead.
    • Don’t skip breakfast and eat your breakfast early! Nutritionist did not kid when they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. An early breakfast will ‘wake up’ your system and boost your metabolism.
    • Do not over eat – When you skip a meal you will tend to starve your body and in turn, might lead to overeating. Instead, eat at regular hours and use smaller plates for your meals. A smaller plate helps you to feel satiated faster and prevent overeating as your brain will still register a plate full of food and you will feel more satiated when the plate is empty.
    • Buy wholegrain products to add more fibre and nutrients into your diet! Swap your white bread and white rice with whole-wheat bread and brown rice. Barley and oatmeal are also great choices to include in your wholegrain diet.
    • Skip the junk food – This one is a no-brainer. If they’re not within reach, it is easier to resist the temptation. Munch on brain food instead like nuts, berries or even dark chocolate!

     

    Now you might think, “What does all this have to do with productivity?” Well, According to the World Health Organization, adequate nutrition can improve your productivity levels by 20%!

  4. Don’t forget to exercise

    Exercising has a lot more benefits than making you look good. It not only lowers your blood pressure or helps to maintain a healthy heart and stress level but it also helps to boost your productivity. Including exercise into your daily routine will literally give you more brain cells. As we grow older, our body may experience a decline in neurogenesis, meaning it generates less and less brain cells. However, studies have shown that regular exercise can prevent this slowdown.

    And while you might think that exercising will tire you out for the rest of the day, this is simply not true! In fact, exercising causes your body to develop more mitochondria (yes it’s the thing you learnt in biology class many years ago), meaning that your body is able to produce more energy for your body and your brain.

  5. Keep in touch!

    This may sound simple but oh, so effective. Human interaction is vital for our mental and physical wellbeing. The restricted movement due to COVID-19 means that we have less human interactions and we might worry about our loved ones who are far away from us. The physical distancing imposed on us might even make you feel lonely and gloomy. This state of disconnection has a profound negative impact on our health. It could lead to lower life expectancy what more on our ability to stay productive.

    Keep in touch with your loved ones in other ways. Arrange for a family meet up over a video call, a virtual movie night or even dinners and game nights. Thanks to today’s technology, it is now easier than ever to keep in touch with your friends and family. Though it might not be able to replace physical interaction, it will have to work for now as we all do our part to fight the pandemic. Having a peace of mind that those who matter to you are safe and healthy will also help you to stay focus on your tasks at hand.

  6. Give yourself a break

    Last but not least, know when to give yourself a break! Staying at home has blurred the line between work and personal time.
